Capsule Toy figures from Japan are very similar to blind boxes with the main differences being the packaging of the figure which is in a recyclable 2 piece sphere and they are sold by a vending machine.

Note: Gachapon also called gashopon is a trademark of Bandai Toys Japan. "Gashapon" is from onomatopoeic from the two sounds "gasha" (or "gacha") for the hand-cranking action of a toy-vending machine, and "pon" for the capsule sphere landing in the collection tray.
